O, jee

OUTBREAK SAILING VIRUS!

Dear parents/guardians,
It is my sad duty to inform you that, despite the numerous precautions that were taken, we are currently battling an outbreak of the highly contagious sailing virus aboard the Wylde Swan.
We suspect that the virus was already on board in Sint-Maarten, but has been in a slumbering state up till now. However, conditions worsened over the last two days, when abnormal quantities of sunshine and fair winds created the perfect environment for an outbreak. Although we do not wish to create a panic, we must admit that the illness has taken on serious dimensions.
In fact, the infected trainees have taken over the ship. They are everywhere.
It has taken a while before I could safely finish this letter. You see, as I was supposed to be the second mate on this ship I have to make use of the computer in the navigation room, but they keep coming in and will insist on writing watch orders or jotting down positions on the chart. Or they will download the newest GRIB-files and start lengthy discussions on which route to take. At the moment we are heading for Land’s End. I just hope they will not maroon us.

It is almost eleven o’clock, which means that within seconds the new second mate will come in here and fill out the logbook. I can only say to you: When you come to pick up your beloved child on April 25th, please make sure that all the members of your family are wearing mouthcaps, especially the young ones. Otherwise an epidemic will be inevitable, and the consequences not to be overseen.
I have to go now..
